The EPO will issue the patent grant certificate with a new layout for patents where the mention of the grant is published in the European Patent Bulletin from 1 April 2022. The new design will reflect the EPO's commitment to digitalisation, modernisation, innovation and sustainability. The re-design will also reinforce the link between the certificate and the patent, by indicating the title of the invention and the date of publication of the mention of the grant in the European Patent Bulletin. The information currently appearing on grant certificates, such as the names of the proprietors, will continue to appear.

How users receive their grant certificates is also being improved. Proprietors or representatives will be able to download grant certificates from their Mailbox. This will allow for fast and secure retrieval of certificates and will contribute to the EPO's sustainability goals by reducing the use of paper. Over 5 000 users have already activated their Mailbox at the EPO for securely handling their communications with the EPO.
