Background

Recently, Delhi University which is one of the most elite universities in India is planning to start a certification course on patent laws. This would be one of its kind courses that will give deep insights into patent law students. It’s the first time that Delhi University is starting such a type of course.

IPR or Intellectual Property Rights are crucial assets for the creator or inventor of any innovative idea. It safeguards the legal rights of the actual inventor. Registering Intellectual Property Rights can lead to many unexplored opportunities. It also rewards the creator with name and fame along with monetary benefits.

Patent laws are the sub-set of IP law. They come under the ambit of Intellectual Property Law. Currently, patent laws are taught as a part of the Intellectual Property Rights paper at Delhi University’s law faculty. However, some science course also includes chapters related to Intellectual Property Rights.

Highlights of the Course:

This course will be governed and administered by the newly constituted committee, which is headed by Daman Saluja, who is a professor at Medical Biotechnology Laboratory in Delhi University’s B.R. Ambedkar Centre for Biomedical Research.

This certificate course will be of short duration and will likely be a three to four months program.

The course will be conducted in a hybrid manner i.e., it will be conducted both online and offline. Also, it will be conducted and offered multiple times a year.

In May, Union Education Minister Mr. Dharmendra Pradhan suggested that Delhi University should start a short-term diploma course on the patent process.

How this Course can be Helpful?

The course aims to provide basic knowledge that revolves around patents such as filing of patents, fundamentals of patents, and which inventions are patentable, and which are not. This will also help students to make their research, a “tangible” product and will also give them an overview regarding the filing of patents.

According to Ms. Saluja, there’s a dearth of knowledge around patent laws in India and that’s why our country is lagging in innovation. This course will help students in upgrading their knowledge regarding patents and Intellectual Property Rights as a whole.

This course will come in handy for everyone especially science students who want to learn more and widen their knowledge regarding Intellectual Property Rights specifically patents and patent law.

Currently, India is filing more and more patents and inventors are also inventing new innovative technologies which are feasible on a global basis. However, we are still far behind our western counterparts. Since it’s a new unconventional domain, there is a lack of awareness when it comes to Intellectual Property Rights and Patent law.
